GODLEY — After a disappointing loss at Glen Rose last week, Godley came ready to play on senior night against Venus as the Wildcats overwhelmed the Bulldogs for a 61-12 win to secure a playoff berth.
Godley improved to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in District 4-4A Division II play, clinching a playoff berth for a fifth consecutive season and the first under head coach Curtis Lowery.
After a line-drive opening kickoff pinned them back at the six-yard line, the Wildcats methodically drove 94 yards on 10 plays and scored on an Ethan McBryer eight-yard quarterback keeper for a 7-0 lead less than four minutes into action.
Less than two minutes later, McBryer added another score on a 33-yard run. And only 14 seconds had run off the clock when Godley scored again on a Parker Priddy 41-yard interception return and a 21-0 lead not even halfway through the opening quarter.
McBrayer added a 19-yard TD pass to Caden Midkiff and McBrayer finished the first-quarter barrage with a 13-yard run as the Wildcats held a commanding 33-0 lead after the opening 12 minutes.
In the second quarter, Priddy scored on a 76-yard blocked field goal return for a TD.
McBryer was pulled in the second quarter as he finished with three rushing TDs, one passing and 55 yards on the ground on only three carries. Caden Burke filled in nicely adding 77 yards rushing and 75 yards throwing. He tossed a pair of TD passes on a perfect 5-for-5 night.
One of Burke's TD tosses was a three-yarder to Brenen Hawkins, who out-jumped the defender for a highlight-reel snag.
Burke also had a 23-yard TD pass to Midkiff.
Venus scored on a 51-yard run by Bryce Brown midway through the third quarter and a 33-yard pass from Brown to Ismael Lucio with 5:07 left.
Godley recorded 25 first downs while holding the Bulldogs to only nine first downs. The Wildcats were a plus-4 in the turnover battle.
Godley travels to Hillsboro next week in a showdown for second place to conclude the regular season.
