JOSHUA — Cleburne sophomore Kyli Ginn wasn’t feeling too well Friday.

But despite her illness, Ginn was able to guide Cleburne to a victory in its district opener.

Ginn connected on all six of her free throws in the final three minutes, while junior Katie Tull finished with a game-high 21 points as the Lady Jackets picked up a 48-45 win over the Joshua Lady Owls in the 6-4A opener for both squads.

“We were a little inconsistent at times and Joshua played well,” Cleburne head coach Mitzi Marquart said. “But we played smart down the stretch and Kyli made some free throws for us.”

When it came down to free throw shooting, both squads fared well. The Lady Jackets made 10-of-12 attempts (83 percent), while the Lady Owls connected on all 12 of theirs from the charity stripe.

Joshua (10-12, 0-1) raced out to a 9-4 lead early in the contest as Abby Babbitt and Ashley Clifton combined for seven points in the run.

Cleburne rallied behind buckets from Carly Thresher, Ginn and Tull to get to within a point at the end of the first period, 11-10.

In the second quarter, the only person to score for Cleburne was Tull as she netted nine points in the frame, outscoring the Lady Owls by three points to give the Lady Jackets (11-11, 1-0) a 19-17 lead at the intermission.

“We came out and played like the building was on fire,” Joshua head coach Angela Drews said. “I can’t fault our effort, but I felt we were forcing things and were a little out of control.”

In the third period, the Lady Owls came out hot, thanks to the play of Elizabeth Dominguez, who had two early fouls and never touched the ball in the opening frame.

Dominguez scored six points, while Babbitt also had six points as the Lady Owls used a 20-15 scoring advantage to retake the lead over Cleburne heading into the fourth quarter, 37-34.

The Lady Jackets retook the lead early in the final frame, but Joshua moved back out to a three-point advantage, 41-38, on a pair of free throws by Dominguez with 5:24 to go.

Cleburne answered with a 6-2 bolt to go up, 44-43, with 2:35 to go.

A pair of free throws by Courtney Ubernosky with 1:47 remaining gave Joshua its last lead of the game, 45-44, as Ginn made four straight free throw attempts during the last 100 seconds of the contest to give the Lady Jackets the victory.

“We had a lot of people step up and play well,” Marquart said, noting the play of Rebecca Anderson, Sara White and Thresher. “It was a little ugly at times, but it was a good game.”

Tull finished with 21 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists, while Ginn added eight points and three assists. Thresher and Anderson came in with seven and six points, respectively.

Babbitt led Joshua with 11 points and six rebounds, while Dominguez contributed 10 points and seven boards. Ubernosky finished with eight points, eight rebounds and three steals.

The Lady Jackets are at home Tuesday in district action against Brewer, while the Lady Owls journey to Aledo.
