The Burleson Centennial Spartans went 5-0 to win the M.T. Rice Holiday Classic Tournament.

The Burleson Centennial Spartans went 5-0 to be crowned tournament champions at the M.T. Rice Holiday Tournament in Waco.

After going 4-0 during the first two days of the tournament against some stellar Class 6A competition, the No. 11-ranked Spartans edged Pflugerville Hendrickson, 66-47, Saturday to capture the tournament title. 

It was the Spartans’ second tournament championship this season as Centennial improved to 16-4 on the season.

Jacob Stuckey, Tayton Conerway and Keryn Collins each received all-tournament honors for the Spartans. Conerway averaged 24 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals to be named tournament MVP. Stuckey averaged a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds per game. And Collins averaged 16 points, six assists and five rebounds.

On Friday, Centennial beat No. 24 (6A) Waco Midway, 68-56, as Conerway led the way with 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists while Stuckey added 10 points and eight boards.

In their first game Friday, the Spartans beat Lake Ridge, 78-64, as Conerway poured in 23 points with five rebounds and four assists while Stuckey had a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Collins scored 19 points with seven assists while Zach Bolf added 12 points and eight rebounds.

On day 1 of the tournament Thursday, Centennial picked up wins of 91-89 in overtime over Grapevine and 77-66 over Austin Anderson (ranked No. 20 in 6A).

In the win over Grapevine, Conerway erupted for 38 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and five blocks while Stuckey netted 26 points and 12 rebounds. In the win over Anderson, Stuckey scored 31 points with five boards while Conerway added 23 points and 12 rebounds with five steals and four assists.

The Spartans will open District 5-5A play against the Everman Bulldogs at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Spartan Arena.
