WACO — The Cleburne Lady Jackets started off District 16-4A play on the right foot with a 25-12, 25-16, 18-25, 25-22 win over Waco University on Friday night.

With postponements and delays abound on the football field because of rain and lightning, the Lady Jackets (12-13, 1-0) were affected inside the gym as a leaky roof forced the squads to relocate to a different facility.

Cleburne head coach Floyd Rogers said it was nothing his team couldn’t handle.

“It went quite a bit differently than we were expecting, obviously,” Rogers said. “We were pretty composed, overall, and it was a pretty crazy evening, but we came out with a win.”

With injured sophomore setter Lacy Stinebaugh back in the lineup, Rogers said her presence was a boost for the Lady Jackets.

“We’re still trying to get fully healthy,” Rogers said. “This was a good start. I held her out in a few games to get our freshman [setter] some more experience.”

In the victory, Morgan Brown had 17 kills, a dig and two blocks; Aley Zachary had 10 kills and two digs; Haylie Marshall had seven kills, 10 digs and an ace; Kayla Ingram had two kills, five digs and a block; Kaci King had an ace; Callie McNulty had seven kills and four blocks; Shelby Contreras had 17 digs and three aces; Linsey Munguia had four digs and two aces and Stinebaugh had five digs, three aces and 40 assists.

Cleburne will continue district play by taking on Ennis at 6:30 p.m. on the road on Tuesday.

The Lady Jackets will face Corsicana at 5:30 p.m. on Friday on the road.
