Haley Jones helped lead the Cleburne Lady Jackets to a 3-2 showing at the Midlothian Heritage Hoopfest Tournament Thursday through Saturday. Cleburne’s only two losses came against state-ranked teams in Glen Rose and Argyle.

MIDLOTHIAN — The Cleburne Lady Jackets went 3-2 in the Heritage Hoopfest Tournament.

Cleburne picked up wins of 69-44 over Alvarado and 42-33 over Brewer on Thursday.

Then the Lady Jackets dropped a couple of games vs. state-ranked teams — a 32-23 loss to No. 8 Glen Rose, and a 58-21 loss to  No. 16 Argyle.

Cleburne rebounded with a 39-29 victory Saturday over Ferris.

The Lady Jackets slowly pulled away from Ferris over the course of the game, holding leads of 9-8 after the first quarter, 21-17 at halftime, and 30-25 after three.

Cleburne out-rebounded Ferris, 37-22.

Haley Jones led the way with 17 points, four rebounds and two steals. Zoe Wilson and Malea Whiteside each added eight points. Wilson had seven rebounds and two steals while Whiteside added eight rebounds and three steals. Wendel’lyn Moblin scored six points with five boards.

In the Argyle loss, the Lady Eagles left no doubt early with a 22-2 lead after the first quarter. Argyle shot 45 percent compared to Cleburne’s 25. Jones scored seven points while Wilson added six points with six rebounds.

In the loss to Glen Rose, Cleburne faced a 16-10 deficit at halftime in a defensive battle as neither team shot over 28 percent for the game. Jones scored 10 points while Wilson added six points and four boards.

In Thursday’s 42-33 win over Brewer, Cleburne used a 12-4 edge in the third quarter to take a comfortable lead of 30-17 going into the fourth. Cleburne held Brewer to 28 percent shooting while the Lady Jackets shot 37 percent, including 3-of-4 from 3. Jones scored 19 points with five rebounds and four steals while Moblin added 18 points with five rebounds. Whiteside scored five points with 10 rebounds.

In Cleburne’s 69-44 victory over Alvarado, the Lady Jackets won every quarter en route to the 25-point victory. Cleburne forced Alvarado into 26 turnovers as Cleburne scored 28 points off those takeaways. Jones poured in 24 points with seven rebounds and four steals. Moblin netted 14 points with six rebounds. Wilson, Whiteside and Bridget Cockran each added seven points, with Wilson adding six rebounds and Whiteside collecting seven boards with six assists and five steals.

Cleburne (8-10) is scheduled to open District 14-5A play at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday against Red Oak from Jeff D. Cody Arena.

Jackets fight hard in Glen Rose Tourney

The Cleburne Yellow Jackets lost several close and hard-fought games over the weekend at the Glen Rose Lions Club Tournament.

Despite going winless in the tournament, Cleburne took steps forward by being competitive in all but two of its games across the three-day tournament.

Cleburne dropped a 57-50 decision vs. Granbury to open tourney action Thursday before falling to Saginaw, 59-35.

The Jackets lost to a strong Midlothian Heritage team, 61-34, on Friday but bounced back with a strong effort in a 67-65 loss to San Angelo Central.

The Jackets wrapped up play in the Glen Rose Tournament with a 38-34 loss to rival Joshua.

Cleburne (1-12) is scheduled to host Granbury at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
