After 39 regular-season matches including 12 district contests, it all comes down to one match, best 3 out of 5, for the Cleburne Lady Jackets’ playoff hopes.
Cleburne and Corsicana are scheduled to play in a tiebreaker match for the final playoff berth out of District 14-5A at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Maypearl High School.
The Lady Jackets (25-14) and Lady Tigers finished league action tied with 6-6 records, including a 1-1 mark head-to-head.
Both matchups between the Lady Jackets and Lady Tigers were highly competitive. The biggest win by either team in a single set was seven points. The average margin of victory per set in the nine sets these two teams played was 3.8 points. In four of the nine sets, the difference was just two points.
On Sept. 21, Cleburne beat Corsicana in five sets (26-28, 25-23, 25-18, 19-25 and 15-11). On Oct. 16, Corsicana claimed a four-set win over the Lady Jackets (25-21, 24-26, 25-23 and 25-19).
“It’s do or die,” Cleburne Coach Rachell Pope said. “... Everybody’s got to be ready.”
Corsicana started district play with a 2-4 record before finishing the second round 4-2, including a win over district champion Red Oak, which was the Lady Hawks’ lone loss.
“They’re hungry,” Pope said. “... They’ve been impressive. They only won two games the first round and now they’ve only lost two in the second round.
“I would just describe them as extremely hungry. They’ve put it all on the line and that’s what our girls are going to have to do and I believe they will.”
The winner moves on to the Class 5A bidistrict playoffs and will face District 13-5A champion North Forney.
