VENUS — The Venus Lady Dawgs won their opening round matchup of the Venus Whataburger Classic, 41-34, over the Fort Worth Southwest Christian Lady Eagles (4-11).

The Lady Dawgs dropped their second round game against the Palmer Lady Bulldogs (11-5), 48-41, to put them in the third-place game of the tournament against Maypearl (4-8) Saturday.

In the opener, the Lady Bulldogs took a slim two-point lead into the halftime break. The Lady Eagles tied it back up after the third, but a strong fourth-quarter showing of 16 points gave Venus a trip to the winners’ side of the tournament bracket.

In the Palmer game, Venus looked to be off to a good start following two free throws by Amanda Perry.

But a 14-2 Palmer run took over, with the visitors’ defense limiting the hosts to one Grace White field goal before the second period began.

Venus fought back in the second quarter, going on a 9-2 surge to open the quarter, including a three-pointer from Holly Couch, and four points from White.

Aerial Longino helped anchor the Venus defense, recording five of her game-high nine blocks in the second quarter.

Palmer answered with a 9-2 run of their own to close out the half with the lead at 23-15.

Palmer came out of the locker room on a tear, scoring the first 10 points of the half, with six coming from the hands of Kendal Harper to extend the margin to 18.

Venus head coach Patricia Chancellor’s team began to fight back once again, scoring nine of the final 15 points of the quarter, although that still gave Palmer a 39-24 advantage.

Venus executed their full-court press break the best they had all game in the final eight minutes. With the help of Palmer fouls and turnovers, Venus pulled to within four points with under half a minute to play. But the cards didn’t quite fall right for Venus, as White fouled out with 12 seconds to play, and Lindsay Walters connecting on the front end of a one-and-one opportunity to seal the deal for Palmer, and send Venus to the third-place game on Saturday.

Longino fell one block short of recording a triple-double with 12 points, 16 rebounds and nine blocks. Perry had 14 points and 17 rebounds, along with five assists.
