Griffin Gayler

Joshua junior Griffin Gayler (20) is one of 21 players from Johnson County to receive TASCO all-region and/or all-state honors for the 2020 season.

Johnson County is well-represented in the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches 2020 all-region and all-state awards.

Alvarado, Burleson, Burleson Centennial and Joshua each received representation on the TASCO all-region and all-state teams.

In a prime example of how dominant Burleson ISD girls soccer was in 2020, the Burleson Lady Elks and Burleson Centennial Lady Spartans combine for seven selections to the TASCO all-state or all-region teams for Class 5A Region I.

Burleson Centennial senior defender Ashli Galupi headlines the Lady Spartans’ selections as a second-team all-state selection with all-region accolades as well. Joining Galupi from the Lady Spartans’ back line is junior defender Kayla Smith, who received first-team all-region honors. And Burleson Centennial senior midfielder Cooper Cowan gives the Lady Spartans a trio of first-team all-region selections.

The Burleson Lady Elks garnered four all-region selections, including a trio of second-team all-region honors in junior defender Olivia Nivens, junior midfielder Jordan Walker and junior forward Maycie Massingill. Senior Abigail McLaughlin received honorable mention all-region.

On the boys’ side for Class 5A Region I, the Burleson Elks are represented by three all-region nods. Junior forward Caleb Yauger and sophomore midfielder Luke Peterson each garnered second-team all-region honors while junior Anthony Mohammed received honorable mention all-region.

In Class 5A Region II, the Joshua Owls are strongly represented with four selections. Junior forward Griffin Gayler is an honorable mention all-state and an all-region selection. Junior goalkeeper Mario Miranda is a first-team all-region selection. And junior defender Nolan Walker and sophomore midfielder Riley McFarland each received honorable mention all-region for the Owls.

The Alvarado Indians and Lady Indians combined for an impressive eight selections in Class 4A Region II.

On the boys’ side, a trio of Indians received second-team all-region accolades in senior midfielder Santos Salinas, sophomore defender Isaiah Soto and sophomore forward Alan Guerrero. Joining that trio is Coach Aaron Estes as an all-region assistant coach. Estes is now the Indians’ head soccer coach, following Israel Stephens’ successful 11-year run as Alvarado's head boys soccer coach.

The Lady Indians also garnered four selections, including three all-state nods, led by sophomore Trinity Ivy’s selection as a second-team all-state as well as all-region midfielder. Joining Ivy as all-state honors are senior defender Kylee Barnes and sophomore midfielder Evan Stevens, each of whom received honorable mention all-state and all-region honors. Senior forward Khloe Lechowicz received first-team all-region accolades as well.

All 21 Johnson County players that received TASCO all-region and/or all-state honors were also represented on the 2020 All-Johnson County team, which was announced last weekend. And 14 of those 21 players received superlative awards on the All-Johnson County team.
