After a tough start to the season, the Cleburne Yellow Jackets got in the win column Tuesday night with a 69-59 victory over Tolar at Jeff D. Cody Arena.
Cleburne had started 0-7 — with a couple of close losses in the mix — before Tuesday's non-district victory over the Rattlers for head coach Jeff Bush's first win in Cleburne.
“It was good; felt more like a relief than anything else,” Bush said. “We've had a rough start, but getting Nash [Mosoba] back was big and getting a win for us is good.”
Cleburne has struggled with slow starts through the first couple weeks, but the Jackets were able to build a 41-28 lead at halftime over Tolar; although Cleburne didn't finish as strong as Bush would've liked.
“We've been saying all along that we want to be playing our best basketball when we get to Jan. 17, so that's where we're at,” Bush said. “We didn't finish the game like I would have wanted. However, for me, I'm glad we won, and now we can go back, look at film, and correct areas we weren't our best, especially in the fourth.”
In his first game after missing a couple weeks with injury, Mosoba helped lead the charge with 19 points and seven rebounds. Blane McElroy poured in a game-high 21 points for the Jackets.
Jake Dobbins added seven points for Cleburne while Isaak Cunningham and Gavin Naquin each pitched in five points.
Cleburne is scheduled to participate in the Glen Rose Tournament Thursday through Saturday. The Jackets will play two pool play games Thursday vs. Granbury at 10:20 a.m. and Saginaw at 5 p.m.
Lady Jackets fall to Southwest
Also on Tuesday night at Jeff D. Cody Arena, the Cleburne Lady Jackets dropped a 47-36 decision to Fort Worth Southwest.
After playing to a 9-9 tie at the end of the first, Southwest held a 16-10 edge in the second quarter for a 25-19 lead. Southwest added to its lead by a point in the third, but the Lady Raiders put the game away in the fourth with an 11-5 advantage.
Haley Jones led Cleburne with 21 points and seven rebounds before fouling out while Wendel'lyn Moblin added eight points and 11 rebounds.
The Lady Jackets (5-8) are scheduled to compete in the Midlothian Heritage Holiday Tournament this weekend before opening District 14-5A play at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at home against Red Oak.
