GRANDVIEW — The Grandview Zebras held the Rio Vista Eagles to just 12 points in the first half en route to a 56-40 victory that places them in third place in District 11-2A at the halfway mark.

Rio Vista (10-17, 0-5) played well on defense throughout the game, but a 21-point effort from Jay Fuller ensured that Grandview (16-8, 3-2) stayed in the top half of the district.

The Zebras only led 7-6 after one period, in an eight-minute span that saw them fail to connect on any field goal attempts. Rio Vista had already put Grandview into the double bonus by the end of the period, giving Grandview multiple chances from the charity stripe.

The Eagles kept the interior and the lane clogged, disallowing any chances Grandview had to score from the inside. Jake Adkison nailed two triples at the beginning of the second quarter to boost Grandview’s lead to 21-12 at halftime.

Fuller caught fire early in the third quarter, scoring 10 straight Zebra points on pull-up jumpers from the elbow, giving the Zebras a 13-point lead with a quarter to play.

A Rio Vista side thinned out by illness was unable to keep up, as the Zebras began to find Jace Lantroop in the post, as he scored seven of his 11 points in the final period.

Rio Vista head coach Dustin Bates said he was proud of his side’s effort.

“We were playing pretty thin, but they still hustled their rear ends off,” Bates said. “We attacked them more in the second half and our guards got penetration, but Fuller’s performance made the difference.”Grandview coach Todd Jarrell gave credit to his team’s edge on the boards for the win.

“The main factor was that we were able to dominate on the boards,” Jarrell said. “[Jay Fuller] has the ability to run away with a game, but they played great defense on us in the first half and made all our shots hard. We also got some big boards from Jace Lantroop, Tyler Pettit and Ryan Macklin down the stretch.”

Rio Vista hosts Maypearl (8-17, 1-4) in search of its first district victory on Tuesday, while Grandview hits the road to face off with red-hot Itasca, who leads the district.
