JOSHUA — The Boswell Pioneers drove their Cougar straight to a tournament championship.

Center Cougar Kemppainen scored 12 of his 20 points in the third quarter, leading the Pioneers past District 4-5A rival Burleson (5-6) in the finals of the Joshua Invitational Tournament on Saturday, 53-38.

Kemppainen also finished with 12 rebounds en route to being named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Teammates C.J. Smalls and Kyle Boen were also named to the all-tournament team.

The Elks trailed by five points at the end of the first quarter and were down by as much as 18 points in the second as Boswell took a 28-15 lead into the half.

Kemppainen went to work in the third quarter, scoring 12 of Boswell’s 14 points in the frame, while Burleson could manage just seven points, trailing by 22 points going into the fourth period, 44-22.

The Elks were down by 23 points on several occasions in the fourth quarter, but six points from Damon Latham and a three-pointer by Falls made the score more respectable by the end of the contest.

Smalls added eight points to the total for Boswell, while Trey Miller chipped in with six points.

Falls led Burleson with 11 points, while Latham finished with eight points. Both were named to the all-tournament team.
