The Alvarado Indians, Burleson Elks and Joshua Owls account for 22 of the 30 total selections on the Classic Chevrolet Buick GMC of Cleburne 2020 All-Johnson County boys soccer team.
In what was a bit of a down year for boys soccer in Johnson County, only Alvarado, Burleson and Joshua qualified for the playoffs — with the Indians and Owls finishing third in their respective districts while the Elks placed fourth. The Burleson Centennial Spartans, Cleburne Yellow Jackets, Venus Bulldogs and Keene Chargers missed the playoffs and dealt with their own challenges throughout the season.
Including superlative honors, Joshua leads the boys all-county team with 10 total selections, followed by Alvarado’s seven and Burleson’s five.
“In the three years that I’ve been at Joshua, we came in with that building mentality and all of these boys have come in and bought in to what we’re doing,” Joshua Coach Thad Goodling said. “They put in the hard work in offseason, through the summer, and when we get on the field, they take everything Coach [Will] Walker and myself are teaching. It’s a really fun environment with this group. A lot of what we’re seeing now with all-district and all-county awards is the payoff with how much work they’re putting in.”
Alvarado Coach Israel Stephens said he’s proud to see his players’ hard work and efforts result in recognition.
“I’m just so proud of all of our players and especially our seniors,” Stephens said. “Last year was not up to our standard, but they committed to the hard work necessary to make sure they got the program back on track and commensurate with what we expect. The position the seniors have put our very talented young guys in makes us excited for the future. So, in a year like this year, where the season prematurely ends due to things completely out of our control, it is great that they received this recognition to validate the work they did. We were disappointed the season ended like it did because we really were beginning to play some excellent soccer. The accolades alleviate some of that disappointment.”
The Joshua Owls and Cleburne Yellow Jackets headline the All-Johnson County first team with three selections apiece.
Cleburne seniors Adan Santana and Brock Barbee along with junior Marco Vasquez received first-team all-county accolades as the Jackets’ top playmakers from 2020.
Joshua’s first-team selections go to junior Daniel Lopez and sophomores Riley McFarland and Deaven Connelly.
The rest of the All-Johnson County first team includes: Alvarado senior Daniel Flores, Alvarado sophomore Alan Guerrero, Burleson senior Gabriel Bustillos, and Burleson Centennial senior Mason McBeath.
The Indians and Owls lead the second team with three selections each in Alvarado senior Logan Wooley along with sophomores Blake Bledsoe and Irvin Diera while Joshua senior Seth Rasmussen along with juniors Matt Roberson and Trevin Gayler represent the Owls’ second-team selections.
The rest of the all-county second team is comprised of: Burleson senior Edgar Zaragoza, Burleson Centennial senior Andres Huerta, Venus senior Mark Anthony Rivera, and Venus sophomore Edwin Valencia.
The All-Johnson County teams are selected by the Times-Review based on all-district selections, statistics, team success and coaches’ nominations.
