Alvarado police on Wednesday arrested a Mansfield man on murder and other charges.
The man, Marcus Keeman Smith, 37, is charged with the murder of Ava Lea Keener, 39, of Alvarado.
Police at about 3:15 p.m. Responded to reports of a suspicious person near Baugh Street and U.S. 67.
The man had entered the garage of a home on Lorie Street, according to reports but subsequently fled.
Police located the man, later determined to be Smith, walking on Janis Street.
Police observed that Smith had bloody hands and blood on his clothing and appeared to be under the influence of some type of narcotic.
Upon checking Smith’s backpack for weapons police found a glass meth pipe.
Smith resisted and pulled away when police attempted to detain him. One officer tased Smith but to no effect.
Smith continued to fight and punched one officer in the jaw, according to reports. Smith continued to struggle until officers placed him in handcuffs.
Smith told an officer that “a female may have an injured throat” at the Lorie Street address.
Police responded to the residence where they found blood on the open back door and the interior in disarray.
Police found Keener covered in blood lying on the bedroom floor. Police located a knife in the bedroom and a second in the hallway.
Tarrant County Medical Examiner lists Keener’s cause of death as homicide.
Johnson County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Jeff Monk set Smith’s bond at $800,000 on the murder charge. Monk set bond at $100,000 on the assault of a peace officer charge and $10,000 on the possession of a controlled substance charge.
