School Board Recognition Month falls in January with a goal of building awareness of the vital role an elected board of education plays in society.

The Rio Vista Independent School District will honor its school board throughout the month and join other Texas school districts to recognize the important contribution trustees make to their school districts and communities.

“Our board is one of 1,039 district and county school boards, who unselfishly contribute their time and talents toward the advancement of public education,” Rio Vista ISD Superintendent Dr. Rock McNulty said. “[They] are the voice of their communities, serving first and foremost in the best interest of our schoolchildren.”

McNulty said school board members establish the vision for educational programs, design the structures to achieve those visions, ensure school accountability to the community and advocate continuous improvements in student learning. The job entails attendance to countless meetings and functions as well as reports, agendas and proposals to read in order to make a host of difficult decisions.

“Even though we are making a special effort during January to show appreciation to our school board members, we recognize their contributions reflect a year-round commitment.”
