Tinley Janszen Amy Thomas

Coleman Elementary School kindergartner Tinley Janszen, center, presents her poem to her teacher, Amy Thomas, at the 2018 Alpha Gamma/Delta Kappa Gamma Poetry Competition and Festival. Entries are being accepted for the 2019 contest.

Cleburne ISD students are invited to submit their original work for the second annual Alpha Gamma/Delta Kappa Gamma Poetry Competition and Festival from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 12 in the Cleburne High School cafeteria.

Grade level contests with a theme-based prompt are planned again this year, with entries due by November 5. Contest entries must be submitted on the entry form, which has been shared with parents in information communicated through Skyward Family Access. Classroom teachers have access to the form and information as well.

“My Christmas Present,” is the entry theme for students in grades kindergarten through second, in which students will write a poem telling what they really want for Christmas.

Poets in third through fifth grade are asked to share thoughts as to why “people” make the holidays enjoyable.

Entries in sixth- through eighth-grade will have writers poetically describing a place that makes the holidays come alive for them, while high school participants will submit poetry on a special holiday moment they have experienced — or would like to.

First, second and third place ribbons will be presented at each contest level, with first place writers receiving $25 Amazon gift cards.

Students who have submitted entries have the opportunity to share their work during poetry readings, which will feature guest presenters.

The evening will include a silent auction, with proceeds benefiting the We Believe in You Scholarship program, which provides CHS recipients with two years of education at Hill College. For questions or information email tshea@c-isd.com.
