It was Wildcat taking on Wildcat on Friday night as Godley traveled to Whitney for a district showdown, where Godley prevailed, 28-26, to improve to 2-0 in District 12-2A play.
Godley jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter after a 27-yard touchdown run by Taylor Luce and a 15-yard scamper by quarterback Ian Aguirre.
Whitney climbed back in the game during the second quarter with two quick touchdowns of their own to pull within 14-13 before Aguirre hit Devin Bolden for a 5-yard score with 13 seconds to go before the half to take a 21-13 lead.
It was that kind of game all night as the scrappy Whitney team climbed back in the game every time Godley seemed to distance itself.
It was not until the Godley defense forced Whitney to turn the ball over on downs with a little more than one minute left in the game that victory was secured.
Godley compiled 322 rushing yards in the win, led by Anderson’s 184 yards on 15 carries while Luce added 84 yards on 13 carries.
Godley (4-2) plays at Red Oak Life on Friday.
