Stacy Sykora of Burleson, a U.S. Olympic volleyball player, was injured in a bus crash on Tuesday in Brazil. She is expected to fully recover.

Stacy Sykora, a Burleson High School graduate and three-time Olympian is in critical, but stable condition from injuries sustained after a bus carrying her Brazilian team crashed on its way to a match on Tuesday, Burleson ISD school officials said.

Team members told Sao Paulo media that libero Stacy Sykora passed out, had a cut on her face and spent the night at a hospital. Sykora, of Burleson, was a member of the U.S. silver medal team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“From what we have gathered, we expect a full recovery by Stacy and her Brazilian pro teammates,” USA Volleyball CEO Doug Beal said Wednesday in a release. “Stacy is an iconic member of our U.S. women’s national volleyball team and is one of our most engaging players with the fans. She is a key member of the team as it competes to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games.”

The latest medical report on Thursday from her mother, Burleson High School Cosmetology Teacher Sherian Richards, confirmed that she is in critical condition, but stable, the school district said on its website.

The Brazilian Consulate has been to see Stacy and called her mom on Thursday, district officials said, and they hoped to remove the ventilator Friday or Saturday and will start to bring her out of the medically induced coma in a couple of days.

When the bus turned over, whatever hit her was very hard causing the head trauma, district officials said.

The bus overturned near the gymnasium where Volei Futuro was to play a semifinal in the Brazilian league. The driver apparently lost control in the rain just outside Sao Paulo, and several players had minor injuries.

The hospital press office confirmed the 33-year-old Sykora was admitted but did not release information on her condition. Most players were released after being treated for cuts and bruises.

“On behalf of the U.S. women’s national team staff, I want to wish Stacy a full and speedy recovery — our thoughts are certainly with her,” U.S. coach Hugh McCutcheon said. “From our understanding, Stacy is receiving quality medical treatment and has the support of our USA Volleyball family, her Brazilian teammates, the Brazilian Volleyball Federation and her many fans in the U.S. and around the world.”

Sykora attended Texas A&M and was one of the inaugural inductees to the Burleson ISD Sports Hall of Fame in February.

The Stacy Sykora and Sherian Richards Fund has been established at the National Bank of Texas to assist with travel and medical expenses.

Donations can be made in person at the bank, 400 E. Renfro or mailed to P.O. Box 1869, Burleson, TX  76097.
