Today, Southwestern Adventist University welcomes Elder Dick Duerksen as the presenter for the University Assembly. Duerksen and his wife, Brenda, are from Carmichael, Calif. The assembly program begins at 1 p.m. at Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Duerksen has a special ministry which makes him uniquely qualified to share his experiences with both students and community. Employed by Maranatha Volunteers International as their official storyteller, Dick and Brenda travel the world catching and sharing stories of mission and missionaries, many of which can be viewed at www.maranatha.org. Brenda coordinates Maranatha’s medical clinics and Dick uses his cameras, computer and voice to share the story of God’s grace from Chobe to Choluteca. Duerksen is also heavily involved in the “One-Day Church” program hosted by Maranatha, a program through which more than 1,600 churches have been built across the world. Built around a standardized steel structure, the “One-Day Church” can be put up for about $1,500. With a seating capacity of approximately 150, these churches answer the need for places of worship for thousands of congregations in countries such as Zambia, Brazil, India and Haiti, where congregations would otherwise go without a structure for years to come.
In April 2009, a “One-Day Church” was built on Southwestern’s campus in the field next to Miller Hall so that students could see first-hand the process and finished project. Duerksen was on-hand at an assembly meeting in April to present the project to the students. The church remained on campus for several weeks before it was dedicated, dismantled and dispatched on its own missionary journey.
Duerksen will present his experiences at the 9 and 11:30 a.m. church services at Keene SDA Church on Saturday.
