Wildcats start sluggish, explode in second half to put away Tigers

GODLEY — Fans showing up at Wildcat Stadium for the contest featuring Godley and Jacksboro were treated to two games for the price of one.

The first half was a defensive standoff between the Wildcats and the visiting Tigers, and the second half quickly turned into a Wildcat romp culminating in a 54-7 win.

Neither team found much offensive traction in the first half.

Midway through the first quarter, Kolby Brown let a Jacksboro punt sail over his head and Jacksboro recovered inside the Wildcat 10.

The defense stiffened as Tigers quarterback Carson Earp missed on three straight attempts, and running back Reid Spiller could muster only one yard on the ground.

Jacksboro turned the ball over on downs, but the Godley offense could generate little firepower of their own until the 6:22 mark in the second quarter when Landry Martinez punched the ball in from eight yards out.

This was the only scoring for either team in a first half full of offensive miscues and defensive muscle.

The Wildcats made some strategic adjustments at half time and came out running on all cylinders to start the third quarter.

On their first possession they methodically marched down the field on a 60-yard drive, scoring on a nine yard Chris Holmes scamper at the 7:12 mark.

They promptly scored three more times in the quarter, effectively putting the game away from the over matched and outmanned Jacksboro Tigers.

The Tigers fared no better in the fourth as the Wildcats scored four more times and the defense laid devastating hit after hit on the Tigers’ offense.

Martinez finished the night with 107 yards on 17 carries and scored five rushing touchdowns.

Kolby Brown more than made up for his early miscue by sparking the third quarter turnaround, and rushing for 56 yards on seven carries and scoring on a 44-yard catch and run from quarterback Rhett Brawner.

Austin Martinez provided much of the defensive pressure completely shutting down the Tiger passing attack and recording two interceptions, both leading to Godley touchdowns.

Godley moved to 2-0, and will travel to Gunter next week to put their undefeated season hopes on the line against another pack of Tigers.
