BURLESON —
The Joshua Owls ended a 63-game losing streak in district play last night with a 43-42 win over rival Burleson on Tuesday night.
It was Coach Jeff Hudak’s first career win as a head coach, and it couldn’t have come with any more excitement as Joshua’s Tyler Wright hit a runner at the buzzer to not only end the lengthy district losing streak, but end an 0-19 start to this season.
“The kids all ran out on the court and it seems like the crowd stuck around after the game for 20 minutes to congratulate the kids,” Hudak said. “It was a great experience.”
The Elks jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead early in the first quarter and held a 13-6 lead after one quarter of play, but the Owls battled back to tie things at halftime. Throughout the entire second half, the game was a back-and-forth battle, Hudak said.
“We kept chipping away and getting good looks at the basket,” he said. “It was back and forth and it seemed like we traded baskets the entire second half.”
While the Owls snapped an extensive losing streak and got the monkey off their back, Hudak said he hopes this leads to more wins in the future.
“I hope they’re gaining confidence and seeing the stuff we talk about every single day does work and will pay off,” Hudak said. “Whether it be now or in the future for the players coming up. I just hope they’re understanding that hard work does pay off.
“There’s not a better way for me to get my first career win as a head coach than to beat a cross-town rival and to snap a long losing streak. It’s something I’ll always remember and hopefully something they’ll always remember.”
Wright, the hero of the game, led Joshua with a game-high 17 points while James Woodley added 10 points.
Joshua hosts Crowley at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
