The banner year for Alvarado High School athletics continued on National Signing Day when Tyler Bates signed with East Texas Baptist University.
The multi-sport athlete, who said baseball is his “No. 1” sport, said he signed with East Texas Baptist because it was the only school which gave him the opportunity to play both baseball and football.
“I had a few bigger schools offer, but that was just for football,” Bates said. “Baseball is my No. 1 thing and this was really the only school that offered me both.
“That’s pretty much what got me.”
Bates said he is missing the first few days of baseball practice because of basketball, but said he feels Alvarado can be good on the diamond.
“I’ll always love baseball more,” Bates said. “But they said I could play on both sides of the ball.
“They haven’t told me exactly what I’d be doing, but I’ll do whatever it takes to get on the field.”
Alvarado Head Coach Jeff Dixon said Bates will do just fine at the collegiate level.
“I’m very proud of Tyler,” Dixon said. “He could’ve gone to other schools, but the smaller school will allow him to do more than one thing. He’s going to do fine.”

Walraven no stranger to Grandview
