Godley, Grandview lead the way in 1st- and 2nd-team selections

GODLEY — For the second consecutive season, the Grandview Zebras and Godley Wildcats dominated District 12-2A play and the teams clashed for the district title in week 10, with the Zebras capturing the gold ball.

With both team’s success in league play, they were each the most represented teams in all-district selections.

Grandview placed 15 players on the all-district first and second teams while Godley was represented by 13 selections on both teams.

Grandview senior Peyton Mahan received first-team honors on defense for his play at linebacker and second-team recognition on offense at running back.

“Peyton is someone that I could see fitting into an MVP slot just because if I would’ve asked him to carry it 30 times a game, he would’ve been successful,” Grandview Coach Casey Walraven said. “Plus he had so many tackles at linebacker on defense. He’s another guy that could easily fit that MVP spot. He’s a true team player. Against Eastland, he played four different offensive positions just because his intelligence allowed him to do that. And that was him all year. I could plug him in anywhere we wanted and know that job was going to be taken care of.”

Joining Mahan on the first-team defense were senior linebacker Nathan Gullickson and senior defensive backs Bailey Smith and Tyler Wallace.

On the first-team offense, the Zebras were represented by senior tight end Chase Goldwater, junior receiver Tyler Fauver, and senior offensive linemen Ace Rurak and Dusty Holt.

“I just think it’s a reflection of the work ethic that we have in our program,” Walraven said. “They work first and foremost for team goals. When you meet team goals and you are successful, you are going to have individuals who shine. I think it’s only appropriate that they get awarded for their efforts and what they attributed to the team. With the awards we had, I think we deserved that with where we finished.”

The strength of the Wildcats’ offense was up front on the offensive line, as five players received all-district first- or second-team honors. Junior Jacob Escalante, senior Skyler Lenz and sophomore Blake Hickey received first-team recognition while junior Sy Guthrie and junior Raymundo Barrientos made the second team.

“I think, hearing other coaches talk before, during and after the meeting, they felt our offensive line was the best in the district, and I think that’s reflected in the number we had in the selections,” Godley Coach Randy Brawner said. “They progressed and gelled throughout the year and at the end of the year, they were the strength of our team and you see that reflected in the all-district selections.”

On the first-team defense, the Wildcats were represented by senior linebackers Dylan Washington and Dylan Portillo, junior defensive back Devin Bolden and senior defensive lineman Jerry Taft.

“I was really hoping that when we went into that meeting that Dylan would get [defensive MVP] and it didn’t work out,” Brawner said. “Of course, I’m biased because he’s one of mine, but a kid who has that many tackles — top 3 or 4 in the state — it’s hard for me to imagine him not getting that. But that’s not how the coaches voted and you have to respect how they voted. But I sure thought he should’ve been the district MVP.”

Joining Mahan on the second-team offense for Grandview were senior receiver Ben Thomes, senior offensive linemen Tanner Mitchell and Aaron Holliday, and sophomore offensive lineman Bridger Pendley. On the second-team defense for the Zebras were sophomore defensive lineman Brayan Villa and junior defensive back Tristan Morphew.

Representing the Wildcats on the second-team offense along with Guthrie and Barrientos were junior running back Taylor Luce and senior kicker Rachael Evans. On the second-team defense for Godley were junior defensive back Turner Hobby and sophomore linebacker Johnny Davis.
