Lady Jackets setting the bar high in powerlifting

From Staff Reports

— Last week at the Venus powerlifting meet, the Cleburne Lady Jackets sent several lifters to the competition.

Kristen Mosaba (181-pound class) placed first at the meet with a total lift of 780 pounds.

Mercedes Spann (220-pound class) placed second with a lift of 675 pounds, Brittney Bryant (132-pound class) was third with a lift of 505 pounds and Megan Howard (105-pound class) finished fifth with a total lift of 360 pounds.

Brittney Dent (220-pound class) placed fourth at the meet with a total lift of 515 pounds.

Head Girls Coach Charles Perry said participation at the meet was down from the previous competition at Kennedale due to the start of softball practice.

“We still did pretty decently,” he said. “We had several girls who didn’t lift. We’re off this weekend and our next meet will be in Godley.”

Godley hosts it meet on Feb. 4.

Perry said some of the girls are lifting at a very high level right now.

“It’s been a pretty successful year so far,” he said. “We’re doing pretty well and we have three girls who have a pre-lift total which would be high enough to qualify for state if they were to do that at the regional meet right now.”

Perry said several of the Lady Jackets have already surpassed the weight they would need to lift to qualify for state. Mosaba, Michaela Starks and Spann are three who have done that in the first season’s few meets. Mosaba and Spann are ranked No. 1 in the region in their weight classes.

Cleburne finished in fourth place at the meet with 18 points. Centennial was sixth (13 points), Grandview was seventh (11 points) and Rio Vista was 10th (eight points).
