Lady Owls take third place after 52-42 victory over Martin
The Joshua Lady Owls took down Arlington Martin, 52-42, on Wednesday to finish third in the Boswell Holiday basketball tournament.
A day after getting 61 points from Brady Sanders in two games, the Lady Owls (8-12) received 18 points from Sanders in the win, and another 17 from Mason Smart.
Jordan Wennermark had nine for Joshua which led, 29-21, at the half.
Lady Owl head coach Jim Murphy said his team is playing at a higher level heading back into district play on Saturday against Crowley.
“We played really good defense,” Murphy said. “We rebounded well even though we didn’t do that in the first few minutes. We passed the ball well.”
Murphy said Martin was a good test for his team as it re-enters the rigors of 8-4A play, a district loaded with former Class 5A schools.
“They beat Mansfield Summit in their district, which lost to Timberview by four,” Murphy said. “That’s a good indication that we’re capable of playing up there. We’re moving in the right direction.”
Murphy said Joshua is playing better than its overall record would indicate.
“We could easily be 12-8 or better,” Murphy said. “We’re improving, so that’s what matters.
“If we feed off of the positive aspects of this, it was a big game for us. If we feed off the enthusiasm and go into the Crowley game with it, it could be a good, positive thing for us.”
