Nolan edges Godley for tourney title

GODLEY — The Godley Wildcats appeared to be headed to overtime after a desperation 3-pointer from Jacob Ramirez seemed to have tied the title game of the Wildcat Christmas Invitational against Nolan Catholic at 43-43.

But, a timeout was called by the Wildcats (7-6) before Ramirez ever put up the shot, and the basket was nullified.

Ramirez had one more chance to tie the game after the stoppage in play, but his final attempt sailed long and Nolan Catholic escaped with a 43-40 victory to claim the tournament title.

Godley rallied from a 29-21 halftime deficit to get within 41-40 on a Riley Good 3-pointer with less than one minute left in the final quarter, but Nolan was able to convert from the foul line in the waning seconds, whereas Godley struggled from the stripe.

“I told the kids that we missed six free throws in the first half,” Wildcat head coach Jon Normand said. “We missed three layups, also. That’s 12 points against a good team and that can’t work against a good team.”

The bigger, more physical Vikings were able to establish themselves in the low post, and turned a 15-11 first quarter lead into an eight-point advantage in the second period.

The Wildcats didn’t back down in the third period and outscored Nolan, 12-7, in the quarter.

“We made an improvement in the second half,” Normand said. “That’s what I asked for, and that’s what they did.

“I’m proud of the kids. They were up by eight on us at halftime, and I thought we could’ve done some things better, but we beat them in the second half.”

Ty Young scored a team-high 12 points for Godley, and Good finished with seven points.

Normand said playing the bigger Vikings will pay dividends in district play, which starts at 5 p.m. Saturday against Keene.

“They played physical and our kids learned to play that way,” Normand said. “We like to play that way. Overall, we’ll learn a lot from this game and I was pleased with the effort we showed.”

Young and Good were named to the all-tournament team.

The Godley Lady Cats moved to 12-6 on the year after a 45-35 victory over Fort Worth Trimble Tech on Tuesday.

Dallas Young led Godley with 23 points, Ashley Allen had 11 and Maelan Brown had six.

Young and Brown were named to the all-tournament team, and Brittney Neill was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
