More tournaments coming up for local teams this weekend

Most basketball teams in Johnson County have played close to, if not more than, 10 games to this point.

Some teams are struggling, while others appear to be picking up steam heading into the district portion of their schedules.

Last weekend at the Joshua tournament, two youthful programs got a chance to settle the score on the court in the seventh place game of the Joshua tournament when Cleburne took on Joshua.

The Owls were able to pick up their first win of the season, 70-62, and sent the Jackets back down Texas 174 looking for answers after the defeat.

Joshua, which had given up 32 points in a quarter to Saginaw the day before, built an 18-point lead on Cleburne in the fourth quarter before the Jackets rallied to cut the final deficit to eight points.

Cleburne (1-5) has a chance to get back on the winning track at 8 tonight in Mineral Wells, and Joshua (1-7) looks to continue its winning ways at 7:30 tonight at home against Saginaw Boswell.

The Jackets travel to Granbury for the Mike Brown Auto Group tournament on Thursday and will have a rematch with the Pirates at 8:30 p.m. at Granbury High School.

The Pirates beat Cleburne in the Joshua tournament, 63-47.

Joshua will take on Killeen at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the Granbury tournament.

The Burleson Elks (9-1) had their unblemished record tarnished for the first time on Saturday after falling in the finals of the Brewer tournament to Everman, 44-33.

The Elks will also be at the Granbury tournament on Thursday and will take on Fort Worth Brewer at 2:15 p.m. in the first round.

The Cleburne Lady Jackets were hoping to go 3-1 in the DeSoto Lady Eagle Classic, said Cleburne head coach Mitzi Marquart, but the Lady Jackets will settle for a 2-2 showing and a 7-5 record heading into Tuesday night’s home battle with North Mesquite at 7:30 p.m.

The Grandview Lady Zebras went 3-2 in the Wortham tournament and won the consolation bracket with a 69-34 victory over Wortham to sit at 10-3 on the year.

Grandview travels to take on Hubbard at 5 p.m. Tuesday and will be in action at the Fairfield tournament Thursday through Saturday on the road.

The resurgent Alvarado Indians lost for the first time in the finals of the Zebra Classic to Waco La Vega, 64-51, on Saturday to move to 6-1 on the season.

The Indians will take on Castleberry at 8 tonight at home with a chance to move to 7-1 on the season.
