Indians move to 6-0 with 34-28 win over Grandview

The Alvarado Indians improved to 6-0 on Friday with a 34-28 win over Grandview in the semifinals of the Zebra Classic tournament at Grandview High School.

The Indians knocked off Fort Worth North side, 65-25, on Thursday to advance to the semifinals.

Alvarado faced Waco La Vega at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the tournament championship, but results were unavailable at presstime.

Ricky Handy led the Indians with 12 points in Friday’s win, and James Kantner and Casey Roberson each had eight points.

Alvarado head coach Kevin Starnes said his team is buying into the winning strategy.

“It feels great,” Starnes said of the unblemished record. “At this time last year, we were 1-5 or 1-6. We’re basically playing the same people that we played then, and we’ve got a much better record.

“That’s more of a testament to how hard the kids have worked in the offseason and to their committment.”

Defense has been the name of the game for Alvarado during the first six games of the season.

“Defensively, we haven’t given up more than 40 points,” Starnes said. “The highest someone has scored on us is 39.

“I think that really shows they’re buying into this.”

With the core of his team still young, Starnes said success is critical for a winning foundation.

“We’re obviously doing something right,” Starnes said. “We’ve got four sophomores on our varsity and getting them not only playing time, but varsity success, will help us lay the ground work to continue this on.”
