2009 season comes to a close

The 2009 football season has finally come to an end in Johnson County.

In similar fashion to the 2008 campaign, the final game for the county was a Class 2A school playing in a regional final.

Godley saw its undefeated season ended by a 26-yard field goal as time expired at Rough Rider Stadium in Saginaw as Pilot Point won, 24-23, over the Wildcats.

The excruciating finish was something not seen in a Godley contest this year as the Wildcats’ closest game before Saturday’s showdown had been a 37-21 decision over Boyd.

Godley proved it could handle a pressure situation, though, and took an early 20-6 lead over the Bearcats before Pilot Point began to chip away in the second half.

Senior quarterback Riley Good threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another while amassing 190 yards on 30 carries in his final game as a Wildcat.

Junior running back Landry Martinez had 168 yards on the ground on 15 carries as Godley churned out more than 350 yards on the ground.

Pilot Point’s passing game proved to be the difference as Bearcat quarterback Seth Tilley finished 12-of-22 for 151 yards and two touchdowns.

The game featured no turnovers and only three punts between the two squads.

Good finished the year with 1,754 yards rushing on 214 carries for an average of 8.2 yards per carry and 26 touchdowns.

He also completed 59-of-87 passes for 1,389 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Martinez finished the season with 1,916 yards on 201 carries for an average of 9.53 yards per carry and 29 total scores.

Five of those touchdowns were receptions.

Senior Ty Young caught 28 passes for 733 yards for an average of 26.18 yards per reception with 11 touchdowns.

Sophomore Kolby Brown had 523 yards rushing on 46 carries for 11 touchdowns.

To recap the season for all of Johnson County’s teams, Godley had the deepest run of the seven area schools.

Grandview (9-2) was second place in 15-2A and advanced to the area round of the Class 2A Division II playoffs before falling to Caddo Mills, 21-14, at Longhorn Stadium in Cedar Hill.

Rio Vista (1-9) struggled in its first year under head coach Chris Carpenter, and the spread offensive scheme, but was able to chalk up a 12-7 victory over Palmer to avoid a winless campaign.

Joshua (2-8) saw a quick, 2-1 start dissolve away, and the Owls’ first year under head coach Jerry Bird ended in painful fashion as a spirited comeback against Arlington Seguin in the season finale fell an extra point short.

Burleson (7-4) had an up and down 2009 as the Elks roared out to a 4-0 start in nondistrict play before dropping three straight District 3-5A games.

Burleson rebounded by winning its final three district games, only to be ousted by Arlington, 38-12, in the first round of the playoffs.

Alvarado (7-5) went 4-1 in District 12-3A and knocked off Fort Worth Castleberry, 63-0, in the first round of the Class 3A Division I playoffs.

The Indians had a shot at revenge in the next round against defending state champion Prosper, which knocked off Alvarado, 29-14, in 2008.

The opportunity went by the wayside as the Eagle escaped with a 13-8 victory as the Indians’ final drive ended in a turnover.

The Cleburne Yellow Jackets (6-4, 3-4 in 16-4A) experienced a stark turnaround from a 3-7, 0-7 campaign in 2008.

Cleburne lost every district contest last season by an average of almost 30 points, but the Yellow Jackets were able get within a game of the playoffs this year.
