Battle of unbeatens in Saginaw

The Godley Wildcats know, according to head coach Randy Brawner, that they will be playing a mirror image of themselves at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Roughrider Stadium in Saginaw against 12-0 Pilot Point.

A bigger mirror image.

“You know, sometimes, on video, you just find some chinks in the armor,” Brawner said, smiling. “Some weaknesses. With these guys, they’re the most complete team we’ve played. They’ve got awesome offensive and defensive lines, their linebackers are good, their secondary is good and their quarterback is probably the best we’ve seen.

“Their running back is outstanding. They don’t have weaknesses. They’re the most balanced team we’ve faced and it’s a daunting task to say the least.”

Brawner said the Wildcats aren’t about to make special adjustments to the Bearcats in Week 13.

“We’re going to approach it like we approach every week,” Brawner said. “To be honest, it’s too late in the season to change what we’ve been doing. We’ve been having success and we’ll try and hold the course.”

The Bearcats offense bears a lot of similarities to that of Godley, Brawner said.

“They’re almost identical to us,” Brawner said. “They’ll run a lot of spread sets and switch to a tight end set. They’re the mirror image of our offense, but just the size of their lines, they’re so impressive. They’re humongous.”

To knock off the Bearcats, Brawner said perfection is the operative word choice.

“We’ve got to eliminate all mistakes,” Brawner said. “The last couple of weeks, we’ve had some self-induced mistakes and we have to eliminate them. We need to play, basically, a perfect game in order to win.”

With Godley breaking school records left and right in 2009, a deep playoff run is old hat for Pilot Point, and overcoming the lack of postseason experience is something Brawner said Godley is supplementing with desire.

“They’ve obviously got a lot more playoff experience,” Brawner said. “Nothing can simulate that. I just hope that we’re hungrier than they are to keep playing.”

While the Wildcats have been winners by an average of nearly 50 points a game this season, Brawner said if, and probably when, Godley is locked neck and neck with the Bearcats, the Wildcats will know what to do.

“I think it’s going to be a real close game,” Brawner said. “As far as what we’re facing, these kids know one thing for sure. If we don’t win, we’re putting the pads up. I don’t think there’s any more motivation they need to know.”
