Cleburne falls, 90-52, to Kennedale
The Cleburne Yellow Jackets fell to 0-2 on the year after losing, 90-52, to Kennedale on the road on Tuesday night.
Cleburne trailed, 27-14, after one period, and it just got worse from there for the Jackets as they trailed, 55-21, at halftime.
Cleburne head coach Greg Kudrna said the Jackets’ youth and inexperience showed itself in the loss, but said as Cleburne continues to build throughout the season, the competitiveness will return.
“They’re No. 10 in Class 3A,” Kudrna said. “They showed that and we’re very young. We made a lot of mistakes. For us, our biggest deal was we didn’t operate our transition defense well. We gave up a lot of buckets in the early stages.
“Brodrick [Martin] got into foul trouble, early and their inside guys were 6-4 and 6-5.
“The transition defense was probably the biggest thing that concerned me, and we didn’t take care of the ball.”
When the Wildcats began to pour on the points, Cleburne switched to a zone look on defense, something Kudrna said the Jackets have little experience running at this point in the season.
“When they started scoring, we went to the zone,” Kudrna said. “We hadn’t worked on that much. We’re young and we have a lot of things to work on.”
Senior Cody Murphy sat out the second game of his two-game suspension for disciplinary reasons, and will return for the Jackets when they take on Glen Rose at 8 p.m. Dec. 1 at home.
Having another returning letterman on the court will bring back an element of leadership, Kudrna said.
“He’ll help us when he comes back,” Kudrna said. “He knows how to play the game.”
Martin led Cleburne with 10 points, while Ty Campbell had seven.
