And then there was one
Just like that, Johnson County has but a sole remaining squad left in the football playoffs.
The Grandview Zebras were close to moving onto the Class 2A Division II regional quarterfinals, but the Zebras fell, 21-14, against Caddo Mills on Friday night at Longhorn Stadium in Cedar Hill.
The Foxes’ star running back, Nathan Jeffery, rushed for more than 200 yards and had two scores, but the story of the night was the Caddo Mills defense, which limited the potent Grandview attack to less than 200 yards.
Standout Zebra running back Daniel Spencer was held to just one yard on seven carries in the loss.
Grandview finishes the season at 9-2 a year removed from a 13-1 campaign that saw the Zebras advance all the way to the regional final against Pottsboro.
Alvarado nearly pulled off an upset win over defending Class 3A Division I state champion Prosper on Friday night at the Gopher Warrior Bowl in Grand Prairie, but the Indians were stymied on their final drive in a 13-8 defeat.
Alvarado bids farewell to senior running back Broam Hart, who finished the year with just under 2,000 yards rushing.
The Indians’ future will depend in large part on a pack of underclassmen running backs in sophomores Tyler Bates, Wayne Onderdonk and junior Zach Ripley, who had breakout years in 2009.
The lone Johnson County team moving on in the playoffs is the 12-0 District 15-2A champion Godley Wildcats.
Godley overcame a penalty-filled first half by forcing four turnovers against Winnsboro before the offense came alive behind quarterback Riley Good (17 carries, 130 yards, four touchdowns) to lead the Wildcats to a 34-13 victory.
After a scoreless first period, Godley was able to hold the Raiders and their triple-option based offense scoreless in the second frame while the Wildcat offense began to click.
Next up for No. 9 Godley is a date with fellow unbeaten Pilot Point.
The No. 7 Bearcats handled Gunter, 28-14, in the other Class 2A Division I regional semifinal game on Friday night.
One team will pick up its first loss of the season as the two squads will settle a state semifinal berth at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Roughrider Stadium in Saginaw.
