After 10 wins and a District 15-2A championship, Godley head coach Randy Brawner still feels his team has something to prove.
“It’s hard to judge right now,” Brawner said. “We didn’t finish up with the toughest opponents. Obviously, if we were playing Grandview or Maypearl, it might’ve been more helpful.”
So far this season, it hasn’t seemed to matter who the No. 9 Wildcats have played. Godley has eclipsed the 60-point margin four times and smashed the Zebras on Oct. 16, 56-28.
The Wildcats closest game has been a 38-21 victory over Boyd at Bearkat Stadium in Aledo.
That hasn’t been lost on Brawner, either.
“I think we’ve made a lot of progress during the year,” Brawner said. “Sometimes you don’t have a firm grip on how good your team can be in reality. I thought we played real well on both sides of the ball against West and we played well offensively against Grandview.”
Next up for Godley is Troy in the bidistrict round of the Class 2A playoffs at 7 p.m. Thursday at Waco ISD Stadium.
The Trojans will present a ball-control offensive scheme that the Wildcats haven’t seen this year, and that’s something Brawner said Godley must have an answer for if it wants to keep playing.
“If we play as well as we can play, I think the sky is the limit,” Brawner said. “Sometimes it comes down to philosophies on offense and defense, and Troy presents us with a philosophy that is a lot different.
“We like to use our speed and have a ton of big plays. Troy’s philosophy is a grind-it-out type of philosophy.”
Trojan head coach Grady Rowe said his team will have its hands full against the speedy Wildcats.
“They’re very explosive offensively and they have all the tools,” Rowe said. “They’re the best team we’ve faced this year and we’re going to have to play well and not turn the ball over.”
Rowe agreed that the change of offensive pace Troy will bring to the table might be the Trojan’s only advantage.
“I don’t think they have a whole lot of weaknesses,” Rowe said. “One little bit of difference is they haven’t seen our type of offense yet.”
