Cleburne opens 2009 season with road date at Granbury
It’s basketball time again in Johnson County, and several of the area girls’ teams will be hitting the hardwood for the first time on Tuesday.
The Cleburne Lady Jackets are looking to improve on last year’s 18-16, 7-7 finish that saw them miss the playoffs by one game when they travel to take on Granbury at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Cleburne head coach Mitzi Marquart said the Lady Pirates will prove to be a stiff opening test for the Lady Jackets.
“I know we’re excited to get started,” Marquart said. “We’re ready for the season and there’s no doubt playing Granbury is going to be tough, especially at their house.”
One thing Marquart said Cleburne can expect in the season opener from Granbury is tenacious defense.
“I think we’re going to have to handle that pressure,” Marquart said. “They really get after you and you’re going to have to handle that to stay in the ball game with them.”
With the final lineup still taking shape with volleyball players just now getting into basketball mode, Marquart said the test against a perennial playoff contender will serve as a good benchmark for her squad.
“There are two things we’ve been talking about in the preseason,” Marquart said. “That’s defense and rebounding. We’re going to be a little rusty and we won’t have everything in a perfect rhythm yet, but we can work hard at those two things.
“We’re going to have to really work towards our strengths and help each other out at both ends of the court. It’ll be a good start to see where we’re at and to see what we need to work on.”
The Rio Vista Lady Eagles are under first year head coach Jason Hodges and take on Itasca at home at 6:30 p.m.
The Burleson Lady Elks travel to take on Fort Worth Trimble Tech at 8 p.m. on Tuesday while the Godley Lady Cats, 31-4 last season, play at Valley Mills at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The Joshua Lady Owls are looking to get back to the playoffs in ’09, and face Nolan Catholic at 8 p.m. Tuesday on the road.
Keene battle Boyd at 6 p.m. Tuesday at home and the Alvarado Lady Indians kick off the Pattilyn Wilkinson era at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Glen Rose.
The Grandview Lady Zebras will take on Glen Rose at 6 p.m. Friday at Grandview High School.
