Area teams mix routs, close games

Seguin 21,

Joshua 20

ARLINGTON — Joshua entered the season finale on the road against an Arlington Seguin team needing a victory to avoid a winless 8-4A campaign.

Seguin (4-6, 4-3) took a 21-0 first-half lead but was shutout in the second half as Joshua (2-8, 0-7) surged to close the gap to 21-20 as time expired on a 33-yard scoring toss from quarterback T.J. McGough to Michael Keeton, only to fall on a missed extra point attempt.

Owl players collapsed on the field in disbelief when the kick fell short, while Seguin players and coaches breathed a sigh of relief.

It was a tale of two halves. Joshua managed just two first downs and a paltry 86 yards of offense. Seguin rushed for 188 yards and threw for 43 in the first half. In the second half, the Cougars compiled just 59 yards, while Joshua picked up 164.

Dylan Byrd put Joshua on the board in the third quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run to finish off a nine-play, 80-yard drive to cut the lead to 21-7.

With 8:46 left in the fourth quarter, the stadium fell silent for about 10 minutes when Seguin safety Chad Fernandez was carried off the field on a stretcher after suffering a neck injury. Fernandez was moving all of his extremities while on the field.

When play resumed, Joshua drove the field in five plays to cut the lead to 21-14 with 6:46 to play in the game on an 11-yard run by Josh Sigmon. The 28-yard scoring drive was set up by an errant snap over the head of Seguin punter Sean Smith on a fourth and 11 at the Seguin 45. Smith managed to recover the ball before being tackled at the 28.

Seguin had a chance to put the game away but had its drive stall at the Joshua 31 with 2:21 to go in the game when quarterback Martice McNeil was stopped for a 3-yard gain on fourth and seven.

Four plays into the ensuing drive, McGough completed a 4-yard pass to Zack Maxey on fourth and three. Four plays later with about a minute left to play, McGough connected with Keeton for 11 yards to the 50 on fourth and 10. Again, on fourth down with time running out, McGough found Ryan Davis for 12 yards to the 33 on fourth and five from the Seguin 45.

With one second left on the clock, McGough took the snap, avoided heavy pressure by the Cougars and lofted a pass to Keeton, who hauled it in and fell into the end zone.

Davis finished the game with nine catches for 91 yards. McGough was 12-of-25 for 159yards.

Seguin took the lead in the first quarter on a 6-yard run by McNeil. William Martin added a 13-yard scoring run in the second quarter and Sir Davis scored from 10-yards out to make it 21-0.
