GRANDVIEW — The Grandview Zebras (7-1, 3-1) used a balanced offensive attack to dominate the Rio Vista Eagles (1-8, 1-3) at Zebra Stadium Friday night.
The onslaught began early for the Zebras with the offense going 67 yards in 6 plays for the touchdown on their opening drive. The drive was capped by Daniel Spencer who scored from 1 yard out.
The Zebras offense continued to move at will with their next three drives ending in touchdowns.
The next two were touchdown passes from Derek Jarrell to Brant Rice, one from 2 yards out and the other a beautiful fade route to the corner of the end zone from 39 yards out.
The Zebras ended the first quarter up by three touchdowns.
The attack continued in the 2nd with the Zebras going to the ground. Running back Daniel Spencer scored on a nifty run from 58 yards out. Spencer also scored later in the game from 73 yards out.
Spencer’s play was certainly noticed by his head coach Aubrey Sims.
“He (Spencer) gets what he deserves,” Sims said. “He never quits and he works hard, both on the field and off. He is a leader in the locker room and off the field. He is a real special kid.”
Spencer ended the night with 138 yards on seven carries.
The Eagle defense tightened up a bit in the second quarter. However, their offense sputtered and could not get on track.
Late in the seconnd quarter the Zebras began a drive from their own 17. Six plays later quarterback Derek Jarrell cut around the left side of the defense and scored from 10 yards out to extend the lead to 35-0 at the half.
The third quarter wasn’t as kind to Grandview.
With many of the Grandview starters resting, Rio Vista picked up some momentum. The spark came from the defense.
Zebras quarterback Prescott Holloway was hit as he passed on 4th down. The ball was picked off by Chazz Clinkscales and returned 60 yards for the score.
The Eagles weren’t done there. The next Zebras offensive series went nowhere. The punt attempt was muffed and the Eagles took over on the Grandview 12 yard line.
Three plays later, Kenneth Dickerson bolted in from 8 yards out. After the PAT the Eagles had put up 14 points in a matter of about two minutes.
Late in the 3rd the Eagles were able to strike again.
A seven play, 69 yard drive was capped by Cooper Ferguson as he squeezed in from 1 yard out. The 2-point conversion was good and the Zebra lead was cut to 13.
That would be as close as the Eagles would get.
Many of the Zebra starters returned to the line-up and began to light up the scoreboard again.
On their next possession after the Eagle score, the Zebras answered by going 69 yards in only four plays. Spencer finished off another drive scoring from 15 yards out.

Walraven no stranger to Grandview
Casey Walraven is no stranger to Grandview football.
For the past seven seasons, he has served as the offensive coordinator for the Zebras under the tutelage of Aubrey Sims, helping guide stars such as Daniel Spencer and Reid Golson to collegiate careers.
Earlier this year, Sims departed for a new job in Snyder, leaving Grandview in search of someone to lead the program. -
