The Cleburne Yellow Jacket tennis team competed in the Aledo Varsity Tournament on Friday at Aledo High School.
Cleburne head coach Stacey Foster said the performances from several members of the team show progress in the right direction.
“The mixed doubles team of Mark Eldridge and Autumn Mathis played a lot better,” Foster said. “They had a chance to win [in the finals], but ended up losing, 8-6. They had some game points and definitely a good chance to win that match. They cut down on a lot of errors.
“Katie Metcalf played really well. The girl she lost to will be in contention to go to state and she played real well in the second set.”
Metcalf won second place in the girls singles by defeating Elizabeth Conti of Fort Worth Country Day, 8-0; Patricia Whitlock of North Crowley, 8-3; Molly Wells of Peaster in the quarterfinals, 8-3; Dixie Rinker from Aledo in the semifinals, 8-1, but lost to Kristin Brikmantis from Aledo in the finals, 6-1, 6-4.
Autumn Mathis and Mark Eldridge took second place in the mixed doubles competition.
They defeated Baker-Jones from Northwest in the second round, 8-2; after getting a bye in the first round.
They then defeated Henderson-Harding from North Crowley, 8-2, in the quarterfinals; Daughty-Mueller from Granbury, 8-3, in the semis, but lost in the finals, 8-6, to Rogers-Fluty from Northwest.
Katie Roberts and Jackie Kelly won the consolation braket in the girls doubles competition.
They lost in the first round to Thax-Esparza from Granbury, 9-8, defeated Crowley, Brock, and Trimble Tech and then Peaster in the consolation finals, 8-3.
Austin Ash and Will Holleman defeated Country Day, 8-1, Granbury, 8-1, and lost in the quarterfinals of the boys doubles competition to Brock, 8-2.
