Sanders, Neal and Smart nab honors on all-district team

The Joshua Lady Owls placed three players on the District 8-4A basketball team.

Sophomore guard Brady Sanders was selected to the first team while senior Katlyn Mary and junior Mason Smart were chosen as second team selections.

The Owls missed the playoffs with a 11-21 overall record, and a 3-11 mark in district, but assistant coach Danny Gillham said the future is bright for the young team.

“In a district of our caliber, where you had the state runner-up as the district champ and the district runner-up as a region finalist, to get three players on that team speaks volumes about the work they put in and the effort they showed throughout the season,” Gillham said. “It’s nice to know the coaches in such a talented district recognize their talent.”

Mansfield Legacy head coach Amy Tennison took home coach of the year honors in the district while Maegan Conwright of Timberview and Lacy Neu of Granbury shared the co-most valuable player awards.

Keena Mays of Timberview was the offensive player of the year and Krista Summerville of Seguin was the defensive player of the year.

Sophomore Ashley Colbert of Crowley was the newcomer of the year and Alysse Barlow was awarded the 6th man of the year.

The rest of the first team was comprised of Tina Doughty from Granbury; Amber Doolittle of Seguin; Kyaris Johnson of Legacy; Chanice and Chenale Smith of Timberview; Recca Trice and Veronica Azubuike of Seguin; Brianna Bledsoe of Stephenville; Ashley Stamp of Crowley and Ashlynne Evans of Everman.

Gillham said the future of Lady Owl basketball is bright considering two of the three award recipients, in Sanders and Smart, will be returning next year.

“I’d say the great thing is we’re getting two out of those three back,” Gillham said. “It’s very nice to know we’ll have them back and we’ll certainly miss Katlyn, but we like the foundation we have next year for sure.”

After competing in a district that saw four teams finish with 24 or more wins, Gillham said the girls have gained valuable experience playing in such a competitive setting.

“There was a little bit of uncertainty for us this year,” Gillham said. “We knew a lot of them based on reputation, but now they recognize the effort it will take to compete. That bodes well for us in the offseason. They know the level of commitment and they know what they’ll need to put in to compete with that kind of talent.”

The second team consisted of Ashley Watson of Legacy; Alex Adekunle of Seguin; Tayla Vaughn of Crowley; Briana Nickerson of Timberview; Caroline Adesulu of Legacy; Carla Hayworth of Granbury; Takiyah Langford of Seguin and Jennie Thomas of Crowley.
