Indians edge out Rams in finale
The Mineral Wells Rams ended 79 years of football at Miller Stadium on Friday with a 24-21 loss to the Alvarado Indians.
The win moved the Indians to 3-7 on the season and to 2-5 in District 8-4A play. The loss was the ninth in a row for the Rams and left Mineral Wells at 1-9 on the year and 0-7 in district play.
Mineral Wells head football coach David Bourquin said the loss was a tough one.
“Thing didn’t go our way, they haven’t all season,” Bourquin said. “The kids played hard. I hated to see them end the season that way.”
Mineral Wells took a 7-0 lead with 3:14 left in the first quarter.
Brandon Hardeman capped a 14-play, 91-yard drive with a 15-yard run. A 35-yard run by Jeff Smith and a 24-yard pass from Tanner Tuggle to Bryan Farmer keyed the drive.
Alvarado tied the score at 7 with 5:06 left in the first half as Jay Hardy scored on a 32-yard touchdown run. Rydge West added the conversion kick.
Alvarado took a 10-7 lead with 59 seconds left in the first half when West drilled a 25-yard field goal.
Mineral Wells took the lead back at 14-10 with 6:55 left in the third quarter.
Kyle Kelley scored on a 6-yard run.
Mineral Wells moved the count to 21-10 when Kelley scored a touchdown on a 26-yard run.
Alvarado answered with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Ty Raby to Kory Calk with 11:12 left in the game. West added the conversion kick that made the score 21-17.
The Indians put the win away when Hardy scored a touchdown with 6:22 left in the game.
A West conversion kick rounded out the scoring.
