Indians rebound with 34-7 win

ALVARADO — While storms rolled through Johnson County Thursday night, the Alvarado Indians used their own version of thunder and lightning on Friday night at Charles Head Stadium.

Running backs Broam Hart and Zach Ripley amassed 189 yards on the ground and accounted for three touchdowns in a 34-7 win over Waco Robinson.

Hart was the workhorse for the Indians as he rushed 24 times and gradually wore down the Rocket defense.

Once weakened, Ripley tore through the opposing defense and totaled 171 all-purpose yards on the night, 88 of which came via the ground game.

While not only having to deal with Hart, Robinson shot themselves in the foot, frequently.

On the third play from scrimmage the Rockets put the ball on the ground and set up the Alvarado offense on the 35.

Four plays later, Hart bust through the right side for an 8-yard score.

Despite the quick start for Alvarado, the Indian offense sputtered because of penalties.

One such penalty negated a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown.

The Indians were able to get on the board again late in the second quarter as Wayne Onderdonk ran off of the left tackle from 16 yards out with just over one minute remaining in the half.

The score was set up by a mishandled punt snap which was recovered by the Indians at the Robinson 42.

The Rockets looked poised to get back in the game midway through the third quarter.

Starting from the Alvarado 48 and helped by a facemask penalty, Robinson took three plays to go the rest of the way for the score.

Quarterback Matt Walker took the option play around the left side and strolled untouched into the end zone.

After the kick, the Rockets trailed by only six, but Alvarado had an answer for Robinson.

On the ensuing kickoff, Ripley burst through the Rocket tacklers and sped down the sideline to extend the lead to 12.

The Indians weren’t finished.

Pruitt put the final nail in the Rockets’ coffin as he led the Indians on a nine-play drive in the fourth quarter that took up almost five minutes on the clock. The drive was capped off by a 26-yard pass play from Pruitt to tight end Brett Bridgewater.

Robinson had little offensive fuel left in the tank and ran only eight offensive plays after the five-minute mark of the final quarter.

Alvarado added its last score with just under two minutes left as Ripley scored again, this time from 22 yards out.

The Indians hope to move to 2-1 as they host Saginaw Boswell at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Charles Head Memorial Stadium.
