Owls fall to 1-1 after 63-28 loss to Birdville
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — The Birdville Hawks scored quickly and often as the Joshua Owls fell to 1-1, and Birdville stayed unbeaten at 2-0 after a 63-28 win on Friday at the Birdville ISD Fine Arts Comples.
Joshua received the opening kickoff and went three-and-out on the opening drive of the game, setting up the Hawks for their first chance of the night.
Birdville started on the 49, and six plays later, quarterback Josh Doorman hit Landry Peek for the first score of the evening with 8:19 left in the opening quarter.
The Owls couldn’t manage to move the ball on their second drive of the game, and the Hawks had another chance to extend the lead.
Blake Holley sacked Doorman on the drive, but Birdville managed to drive to the Joshua 17.
Doorman picked up his second touchdown pass of the game by hitting Jonathan Dents with the scoring strike with 4:19 left in the first quarter.
Joshua’s offense continued to struggle, meanwhile, and didn’t pick up its first first down until the nine-minute mark in the second quarter.
The Owls began to move the ball in the waning minutes of the first half after converting a fourth-and-1 on the Birdville 31, in which Jesse Williamson found Michael Keeton for a 6-yard gain.
Williamson then finished the job himself by finding the end zone from 15 yards out to bring Joshua to within 29-7.
The Hawks answered quickly after Birdville’s Charlie Renfro returned the ensuing kickoff 77 yards to the Joshua 12.
Doorman then connected with Corey Hines for a 12-yard touchdown, and the Hawks had a 36-7 advantage at halftime.
Birdville continued to apply the pressure in the second half, as it moved the ball downfield on the opening drive of the third period.
The Hawks went 84 yards on six plays and Doorman aired it out to Dents for a 75-yard scoring strike with 9:42 left in the frame.
After an Owl interception, Birdville got the ball back and advanced to the Joshua 3.
Doorman hit Dents again for a touchdown to put the Hawks up by six scores at 49-7.
Joshua responded with a Weston Foster 22-yard run, and 17-yard catch from Williamson to move the ball to the 19 where the Hawks got hit with a costly pass interference penalty.
Williamson found Keeton form 3 yards out to make the score 49-14, before the Owls forced a Birdville three-and-out.
Joshua went 41 yards in seven plays, and Williamson found Dawson for a 5-yard touchdown to put the Owls within 49-21.
Joshua’s final scoring drive came with 5:33 remaining in the game after the Owls went 72 yards, and Colton Dawson plunged in from four yards out to cap the scoring.
