Zebras win, 28-14, Eagles fall, 26-12, to Millsap on road
The Grandview Zebras improved to 2-0 in 2009 with a 28-14 win over Troy, and fellow District 15-2A rival Rio Vista fell to 0-2 after a 26-12 road defeat at Millsap.
The Zebras have won 15 of 16 games dating back to last season which saw Grandview go 13-1 en route the regional finals.
Grandview started quickly on the road with two first quarter touchdowns as Derek Jarrell scampered in from 1-yard out in the early going, and Trent Jackson helped the Zebras on the defensive end with a 40-yard fumble recovery for the score.
Troy responded in the second quarter to cut the lead to seven after quarterback Dylan Sebeck found Logan Tucker in the end zone with a 29-yard pass.
Grandview responded with a 20-yard scoring strike from Jarrell to Brant Rice to extend the lead to 21-7 at halftime.
In the fourth quarter, the Zebras added more cushion to their lead as Jarrell found Phillip Chavez for a 13-yard touchdown.
The Trojans ended the game with a 1-yard scoring run by Cyrus McKenzie to round out the scoring.
The Zebras rushed 32 times for 115 yards, but Jarrell completed 11-of-19 passes for 144 yards and an interception to lead the Grandview offensive attack.
Troy finished with 186 yards rushing on 42 carries and was limited to 59 yards through the air by Sebeck, who went 3-of-14 on the night and was picked off twice by the Zebra defense.
Jacob Pannell was the leading Grandview rusher with 55 yards on 16 carries and Spencer was the leading receiver with 39 yards on four catches.
The Zebras will look to move to 3-0 on Friday at home against Hillsboro.
Rio Vista is still looking for its first win of the Craig Carpenter era after falling to Millsap on the road on Friday.
The Eagles fell behind, 13-0, at halftime after Zeb Littlefield put Millsap on the board in the second quarter with a 1-yard run, and then hit Ryan Van Gundy with an 86-yard scoring strike to extend the advantage to two scores.
In the third, Chris Hicks had a 29-yard scoring run as the Bulldogs extended their lead to 19-0.
The Eagles responded with two scores in the fourth quarter as Chaz Clinkscales caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Cooper Ferguson as did Dalton Smith.
Mat Callan of Millsap scored the final touchdown for the Bulldogs with a 15-yard scoring run.
Millsap outgained Rio Vista, 367-166, in the contest.
Marshall Hicks led the Eagles in rushing with 40 yards on 12 carries, while Ferguson finished 8-of-20 for 84 yards passing and had one interception.
Hicks was the leading receiver for the Eagles with 54 yards on four catches.
Rio Vista will look to pick up its first win of the season and move to 1-2 on Friday against Crawford on the road.
District 15-2A play starts on Oct. 9 for both Grandview and the Eagles as the two teams take their bye weeks during the week of Oct. 2.
