Burleson runs roughshod over Seguin, 31-20

ARLINGTON — Blake Smith rushed for 201 yards and scored five touchdowns to lead Burleson (1-0) to a 31-20 victory over Arlington Seguin (0-1) on Friday night at Wilemon Field.

Smith scored on runs of 16, 12, 4, 2 and 4 yards, respectively, to help the Elks win their season-opening contest.

Despite Smith’s big effort, Burleson had to hold on late in the contest to preserve the win.

Seguin twice cut the Elk lead to five points in the second half; however, the Burleson defense managed to pick up a couple of key stops.

The rest was up to Smith once the offense had the ball.

Leading 25-14 with 8:39 to play in the third quarter, Burleson allowed Seguin to cut the lead to five with a three-play, 59-yard drive.

Cougar quarterback Dorsey Griffin connected with wide receiver Anthony Gale on a 37-yard scoring toss. The two-point conversion pass failed.

After each team stalled on their ensuing drives, the Elks marched to the Seguin five in 10 plays.

But Smith was met by a host of Cougars, which stripped the ball and took over at the Seguin 8.

Seguin moved the 29 before Griffin was stuff on a fourth and one play with 5:20 to play in the game.

The Elks took over on downs and Smith scored his final touchdown five plays later to seal the contest.

Overall, Burleson rushed for 436 yards on 66 attempts, 34 by Smith. Amery Duncan added 101 yards on 11 attempts and Theo Hollars had 74 on 13 carries.

Hollars also hauled in two Brice Warren pass attempts for 29 yards in the second half.

Burleson had the upper hand early in the contest, jumping out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter.

Smith capped a nine-play, 70-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown. On its next possession Burleson scored on a Smith 12-yard run. A crucial defensive holding penalty

by Seguin on fourth and seven play kept the drive alive for the Elks.

Warren finished the game 4-of-6 for 50 yards

Seguin kept its hopes alive throughout the contest but could never take the lead. Quarterback Dorsey Griffin scored from 4 yards out to cut the Burleson lead to 13-7 in the second quarter and teammate Larry Conston scored on a 42-yard fake punt to make it 19-14 at the half in favor of Burleson.

Griffin was held to 6-of-18 passing for 91 yards and had one interception.
