Jackets place 6 on all-district 1st team

Cleburne defense represented by four selections on 1st team

CLEBURNE — The District 8-4A superlative selections and first and second teams were released on Tuesday, and despite missing out on postseason play, the Cleburne Yellow Jackets were well-represented on the all-district first and second teams.

“The superlatives usually go to the district champions, and we felt like we were as competitive as those teams that got superlatives, but you’ve got to win,” Cleburne Coach Jeff Merket said. “It’s kind of like the Heisman — it goes to the best player on the best team. Having five players on the first team is still a great accomplishment.”

Cleburne placed six players on the offense and defense first team and four players on the offense and defense second team.

Sophomore quarterback Brian Baca was a unanimous first-team selection for the Jackets. Baca had a tremendous first season on the varsity level as he went 162-of-264 passing (61 completion percentage) for 2,444 yards, 21 touchdowns and two interceptions in eight games before suffering a season-ending injury in week 8 against Crowley.

“Brian came on and did a tremendous job,” Merket said. “And for him to be a unanimous choice at quarterback while missing two games is a testament to the respect he’s received from the district coaches.”

Joining Baca as a first-team selection on offense was senior receiver Kameron Pickett, who had 71 receptions for 949 yards and six touchdowns.

“Kameron had a tremendous year,” Merket said. “He missed a game and a half and still was nearly a 1,000-yard receiver. We’re just really proud of those two guys offensively.”

On the defensive side for first-team selections, the Jackets were represented by junior defensive tackle Tevin Boone, senior linebacker Cannon Martyniuk, senior linebacker Taylor Bird and junior defensive back Reggie Robinson II.

“As a whole, our defense was tremendous all year,” Merket said. “We led the Fort Worth-area in defense so obviously we’re going to be represented well on the all-district selections.”

Bird was third on the team with 70.5 total tackles, with 10 tackles for loss, five sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and four passes defensed. Boone had 53 total tackles, including 14 tackles for loss, four sacks, 18 quarterback hurries and an interception return for a touchdown.

Martyniuk had 61.5 total tackles, including 12 for loss, five sacks and 12 quarterback hurries. Robinson was Cleburne’s second-leading tackler with 80.5 total tackles, one interception and seven passes defensed.

Cleburne was also represented with four selections on the second-team offense and defense.

Senior running back Darion McCullough and Robinson received recognition offensively on the second team while senior linebacker Bre Miller and senior defensive end Terrance Holmes made the second-team defense.

McCullough led the Jackets with 1,059 rushing yards on 187 carries and 17 touchdowns to go along with 26 catches for 199 yards and three touchdowns. Robinson was second on the team in receptions with 36 catches for 811 yards and led the Jackets with nine receiving touchdowns.

Miller led Cleburne in total tackles with 88 to go along with one interception, one sack and two passes defensed. Holmes led the Jackets with nine sacks on the year, to go along with 69.5 total tackles, a team-high 17 tackles for loss and a team-high 29 quarterback hurries.

“To make first or second team is a tremendous honor in a district that is loaded with great football players,” Merket said. “In a lot of other districts, these guys would be first-team players. There is very little difference in first- and second-team selections in my opinion.”

Receiving all-district honorable mention for Cleburne was junior linebacker Cody Cook, sophomore defensive tackle Brad Montgomery, senior safety Kendall Nettik, senior receiver and quarterback Daniel Richardson, senior offensive lineman Hosbaldo Ruiz, senior cornerback Nick Solis and freshman receiver Spencer Suitt.
