Jackets with chances for 1 district title, 4 third-place finishes at district tourney

BURLESON — The first day of the District 8-4A tennis tournament at Burleson High School’s tennis complex wrapped up play, with today’s slate of action set for finals and third-place matches.

The Cleburne Yellow Jackets have an opportunity for a district title in mixed doubles, and third-place finishes in mixed doubles, girls doubles, boys singles and girls singles today in the final day of district tournament action.

In mixed doubles, Cleburne’s Joey Walters and Jeanette Marquez clinched a berth in the finals with their play on Monday.

Walters and Marquez had a bye in the first round, and then beat Burleson (6-0, 6-0) in round 2 and Burleson Centennial, (6-3, 6-4) in the semifinals to advance for an opportunity for a district championship today.

Walters and Marquez will face Crowley’s No. 1 mixed doubles team today.

Cleburne’s Logan Chapin and Daisa Whitton will play Centennial’s No. 1 mixed doubles team today in the third-place matchup.

Chapin and Whitton had a first-round bye before beating Burleson’s No. 2 mixed doubles team, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Chapin and Whitton then lost to Crowley, 6-4, 6-2.

In girls’ doubles, Cleburne’s Kylie Conner and Dana Siler will play Crowley in the third-place match today.

After a round-one bye, Conner and Siler beat Joshua, 6-1, 6-2, but lost to Centennial, 6-2, 6-4, in the third round.

The finals in girls’ doubles will be a Lady Spartan affair with Centennial’s No. 1 and No. 2 girls’ doubles teams advancing to the finals.

The finals in boys’ doubles will feature Waco against Burleson.

In boys’ singles, Cleburne’s Ryan Pardo will meet Crowley’s Elijah Albano in the third-place match today.

Pardo had a first-round bye, then defeated Joshua’s Isaac Portillo, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, before losing to Centennial’s Zach Carter, 7-5, 6-1.

The finals in boys’ singles will feature Carter against Everman’s Angel Palacios.

In girls’ singles, Cleburne’s Sierra Newton will face Everman for third place.

Newton defeated Centennial, 6-1, 6-3, in the first round and then beat Crowley, 6-3, 7-6, in the second round before falling to Burleson’s Hayley Gregory, 6-1, 6-1.

Gregory, who was the district champion last year, will face Crowley’s No. 1 girls player in the finals today.
