— Godley 49, Boyd 6
BOYD — The Godley Wildcats opened the season with a convincing win over the Boyd Yellow Jackets, 49-6. The Jackets were unable to stop the running onslaught of the Wildcats as they amassed 280 yards on the ground, and tallied 358 yards of total offense.
Godley head coach Randy Brawner said he was pleased with the win, although a bit surprised at the lopsided score.
“To be quite honest, I didn’t expect that kind of result,” Brawner said. “We had a lot of injuries during two-a-days and scrimmages and we didn’t have time to really gel.”
The Wildcats took the opening kick of the game and marched 67 yards in five plays, mainly behind the running of Landry Martinez, whose first run of the year went for 35 yards.
Three plays later, Kolby Brown scored from five yards out and Godley took an early lead.
Not to be outdone, the Wildcat defense played extremely well.
They stifled the Jacket running game and limited Boyd quarterback Jared Cate’s throwing options early.
After Boyd turned the ball over on downs, the Wildcats took over from their own 35 and marched down the field.
They converted three third-down plays during the nine-play drive.
Landry Martinez capped the drive with a 15-yard scamper up the middle to extend the lead to 14.
The ensuing kickoff was fumbled by Boyd. Starting from the Boyd 29, the Wildcats would need only five plays to punch in another score and demoralize what had been a rowdy Boyd crowd.
Landry Martinez scored again, this time from eight yards out.
Godley continued its dominance in the second quarter as Martinez and quarterback Rhett Brawner scored on runs of one and three yards, respectively, capping off a 28-point quarter.
Martinez finished with three touchdowns and 112 yards on the ground.
The Jackets managed to move the ball better in the second half, and opened the scoring in the third.
Their 14-play drive ended when Cate hit Junior Whatley on a crossing route from 16 yards out for their only score of the night. The extra-point attempt was blocked.
Starting from their own 37, it took only three plays for the Wildcats to score again as Kolby Brown sprinted 43 yards for the score.
He wasn’t done yet.
Late in the third quarter, after a three-and-out by the Jackets, Brown took the Boyd punt at his own 40 and broke though a group of tacklers. He took it the rest of the way from 60 yards out.
“We’ve got quarterbacks that can run,” Brawner said. “We have Landry, Kolby and Drew Benge. We have a lot of different people in different positions and we’re able to get the ball.”
Godley will play its home opener at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3 against Jacksboro.
