Lady Jackets beat Everman, 14-6, in district opener

EVERMAN — Led by a huge performance at the plate from Jacqueline Torres, the Cleburne Lady Jackets opened District 8-4A play with a convincing 14-6 win at Everman on Tuesday.

Torres, who was a single away from hitting for the cycle, was 3-for-4 with an impressive nine RBIs and three runs scored. She hit a grand slam home run, a triple and a double.

Mackenzie Kirkpatrick got the pitching win in the circle as she pitched four innings, struck out three and walked three. She allowed five runs, but only two runs were earned.

Senior Alli Suitt saw her first softball action of the season after playing a key role for the Lady Jacket basketball team that advanced to the regional tournament. Suitt pitched three innings, walking one, striking out two and surrendering an unearned run.

Cailyn Fenn went 3-for-5 at the plate with three singles, a run scored and a run driven in while Mallory Hommel was 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored.

Everman committed six errors in the loss.

Under first-year head coach Kala Winn, the Lady Jackets have got off to a hot start to the season. The district-opening win puts the Lady Jackets at 7-2 after the first three weeks of the season.

Cleburne is scheduled to compete in the North Crowley Tournament starting Thursday.

In other District 8-4A action, Joshua beat Burleson, 8-1, and Burleson Centennial beat Waco High, 18-3, on Tuesday. The Lady Spartans put up 17 runs in the first inning of their run-rule win over the Lady Lions.
