Zebras move to 3-0 after home shutout of Blooming Grove
GRANDVIEW — As soon as the Grandview Zebras met at midfield before their Homecoming game against Blooming Grove, the lights in the stadium went out.
After a 15-minute delay, the lights shined bright on the Zebras as they rolled to a 44-0 victory.
Grandview (3-0) began the game with two rushes for negative yardage, but a pass interference call against Blooming Grove (0-3) moved the chains for a first down before Jacob Pannell broke off a 51-yard run. Two plays later, the Zebras put their first score on the board with a 3-yard run by Daniel Spencer.
Grandview got the ball back a couple series later when a Blooming Grove punt was blocked and the Zebras took over at the Lions’ 48-yard line. Quarterback Derek Jarrell connected with Spencer for an 8-yard gain. A 35-yard run by Pannell was followed by a holding penalty against Grandview, but that didn’t stop Spencer from zig-zagging his way 17 yards for a touchdown with 1:01 left in the first quarter.
Jarrell was able to connect with Brant Rice for a 67-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter, and the duo hooked up again for a 17-yard score with 17 seconds left on the first-half clock to take a 28-0 lead into halftime.
Blooming Grove fumbled its opening possession in the second half, and it only took the Zebras five plays for Spencer to find the end zone on a 1-yard run.
A nine-yard punt from the Lions put the Zebras in scoring position at the Blooming Grove 10-yard line, and two plays later Phillip Chavez scored on a 9-yard run.
Blooming Grove begins District 14-2A play next week at home against Edgewood while Grandview looks to extend its perfect record when the team travels to Boyd on Friday.
The Zebras begin district play on Oct. 9 at Dallas Life.
