Wildcats move to 4-0 on the season after powering past Boyd
The Godley Wildcats’ (3-0) bandwagon has to be at standing room only after Friday night’s 38-21 victory over the visiting Boyd Yellow jackets (1-3).
After trailing early the Wildcats shifted into another gear the Yellow Jackets simply could not match.
The Wildcats got off to a shaky start, taking the opening kickoff straight down the field, but losing yardage turning a 1st-and-goal into a fourth and long.
The Wildcats had to settle for a 22-yard Troy Hunt field goal.
Boyd marched down the field and scored on a 14-yard Tim Fleming run, making the score 7-3 with 3:53 left in the first quarter.
This marked the first time all season Godley trailed at any point in a game.
After the Yellow Jackets missed a 38-yard field goal attempt, Godley delivered an eight-play drive capped by a Riley Good 1-yard scoring run with 4:03 left in the period.
Boyd’s Casey Graham fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and the Wildcats capitalized with a 34-yard touchdown strike from Good to Ty Young to extend their lead to 17-7.
Boyd’s Ryan Wilson ended the first half with a 1-yard scoring run to cut Godley’s lead to 17-14 at halftime.
Boyd started the second half with a Tim Fleming 91-yard kickoff return to regain the lead 21-17.
That would be all the offense the Yellow Jackets could muster the rest of the night.
With 8:07 left in the third quarter, the Wildcats scored on a 9-yard run from Landry Martinez.
After holding the Yellow Jackets out of the end zone, the Wildcats scored again with 1:51 left in the third quarter on a 4-yard Good scoring scamper.
Godley put the game out of reach scoring on a 13-yard run by Good with 1:25 remaining.
The Boyd offensive attack was slowed late in the third when Fleming left the game with a sprained ankle.
His replacement, Tim Warner could never get the Yellow Jacket offense on track and the swarming Godley defense stiffened.
Martinez led all rushers with 178 yards on 20 carries and Good carried 23 times for 159 yards.
Good also passed for 137 yards on 6-of-9 attempts with one interception.
Fleming led the Boyd ground attack with 52 yards on 18 attempts and was 9-of-13 through the air for 121 yards.
