Eagles fall just short in home loss to Wildcats
RIO VISTA — Scurry-Rosser (2-2) scored two unanswered touchdowns to beat Rio Vista (0-4) and spoil the Eagles’ homecoming game Friday at Eagle Field.
The Wildcats threatened first when the drove the ball to the Rio Vista 14, but the Eagle defense held and pushed Scurry-Rosser back to the 36.
The Eagles struck on the first play of the second quarter.
Rio Vista had the ball on 1st-and-10 on their own 23 when they ran a sweep to the left side and senior running back Marshall Hicks took the ball 77 yards for the score.
Kenneth Dickerson’s extra point attempt split the uprights at the 11:53 mark of the second quarter and the Eagles had a 7-0 lead.
Rio Vista then forced the Wildcats to a three-and-out, but could not move the ball on its next possession.
Scurry-Rosser had the ball on its own 17 and drove 83 yards in 14 plays to set up its second score of the game.
The Wildcats faced a 4th-and-goal at the 6 when Jake Parker found Ryan Tibbets in the end zone with 39 seconds left on the clock before halftime.
The extra point was good and the two teams entered halftime tied, 7-7.
Rio Vista recovered the second half kickoff on the 15 and was able to move the ball to their 40.
Eagle quarterback Cooper Ferguson hit Aaron Rodrick for 22 yards and the drive looked promising, but the Scurry-Rosser defense stiffened, and Rio Vista was forced to punt.
The Wildcats took over on their own 25, but junior Eagle linebacker Chaz Clinkscales sacked Parker for a 7-yard loss to give Scurry-Rosser a 2nd-and-17.
Rio Vista’s Tyler Allen intercepted a Wildcat pass on the 13 to end the Scurry-Rosser threat.
On the Eagles’ next possession, Rio Vista attempted a screen pass, and the Wildcats got an interception of their own and returned it to the Eagle 20.
It didn’t take long for Scurry-Rosser to punch the ball into the end zone.
The Wildcats’ Blaise Brown rushed for 12 yards and Scurry-Rosser faced 1st-and-goal on the Rio Vista 8.
Carlos Cruz took over from there with an 8-yard scoring scamper to provide the final margin of victory.
Hicks finished with 107 yards on four carries, and Ferguson was 5-of-20 for 82 yards with one interception.
The Eagles play at Whitney at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
