BURLESON —
After Thursday night, Burleson Centennial had never lost a football game. The Spartan's 34-7 win over Dallas Hillcrest on Thursday night at Elk Stadium marked the first win in the school's two-year history. It was the team's first-ever varsity football game.
Centennial trailed, 7-0, in the first quarter after Dallas Hillcrest struck first with a 10-yard touchdown hookup between quarterback Rocky Reyes and receiver James Myles.
Centennial answered back with a long touchdown drive that showcased the talents of Spartans' running back DeMarcus Williams, who had 131 yards on the ground in the first half. Quarterback Tanner Hodges plunged in from two yards out to make it 7-6. The extra-point attempt failed after a botched snap.
Hillcrest would not score again. The Panthers managed just five offensive yards in the first half to Centennial's 175. The Spartans took the lead for good with 4:53 left in the second quarter on a two-yard touchdown run by Williams. The two-point conversion failed, but it didn't matter.
Spartans' receiver Doug Hopkins caught touchdown passes of 21 and 32 yards in the second period from Hodges to give Centennial a 27-7 halftime lead.
Williams finished with 204 yards on 23 carries. Hodges was 5-for-13 for 85 yards and two scores.
Hillcrest finished with 86 yards of total offense.
